Junior Academy Class Descriptions
All our Junior Academy classes are based around a few simple philosophies: first, to become a great tennis player, you have to PLAY tennis! Kids are taught the athletic skills they need to start serving and rallying as quickly as possible; after that, technique is added to create a complete player. Second, kids should love to compete, and know how to do it with sportsmanship and fair play. Competition is introduced in team formats so all players learn how to win and lose with a great attitude. Finally, kids learn best when they're having fun! Tennis is built so that anyone can enjoy it for a lifetime. So let's get started!
Tiny Tennis (Ages 3.5 - 5)
Designed to help young players get started, this class uses a modified court size and equipment, and focuses primarily on developing the athletic ability that forms a base for the game of tennis. Fun and educational drills and games emphasize athletic skills (balance, coordination, and agility) and incorporate basic rules, as well as sportsmanship, etiquette, and social skills.
Red 1 (Ages 5-8) and Red 2 (Advanced)
Also played on the modified red ball court, these classes focuses on beginner and intermediate players. Students will improve their athleticism (balance, coordination, and agility), and develop tennis-specific skills including swing shapes, footwork, and simple tactics. Players will work together as teams in many activities, integrating control, placement, and teamwork. Other games give players a chance to compete, instilling a drive in young players to improve and succeed.
Orange 1 (Ages 8-11) and Orange 2 (Advanced)
The orange ball level uses a modified court, midway between the red ball court and the full-size court. The low compression orange ball has a bounce height appropriate for most players in this age range and gives players more time to react and practice swing set-up and tactics as their motor skills are rapidly improving. Players will practice scoring and rules, and will be introduced to match play through shortened sets.
Green 1 (Ages 10-15)
This class focuses on strokes, footwork, and basic strategy. Players will use a green dot ball which is slightly slower than the regulation adult yellow ball. This ball facilitates stroke mechanics and movement patterns and allows more time to react and plan during play. Scoring, etiquette, and rules will be taught through games and match play, and students will begin to look for weaknesses in opponents and practice developing their own strategies.
Green 2 (Advanced)
The most advanced green ball class is intended for players actively competing in sanctioned tournaments as well as Bay Club Launching Pad Tournaments and USTA Junior Team Tennis. Players will continue to refine technical and tactical skills while also focusing on advanced strategy concepts, match toughness, and improving tennis-specific strength/conditioning.
Junior Advanced (Ages 11+)
These classes are for experienced players looking to compete in high school or tournament tennis. Players will refine their strokes and movement and develop situational strategies, while learning to recognize strengths and weaknesses in opponents.
Match Play (Orange, Green, and Yellow Ball Players)
Match Play is supervised by one of our instructors and is intended to give players an extra chance to work on the skills learned during Junior Academy classes. Match Play is included in the monthly cost for players participating in two or more weekly classes.
